Even when summer fades, it’s still possible to enjoy fruits’ flavor and nutrients, because several are still in season as the weather starts changing. When you have an inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), such as Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis (UC), though, you may need to modify how you prepare fruits to make them more digestible, and fall selections are no different.

“Although fruit is considered healthy on its own, raw fruit can increase the risk of gastrointestinal distress for those with IBD,” says Adiana Castro, RDN, a registered dietitian specializing in gut health who owns Compass Nutrition in New York City. “Because of that, preparation is key, particularly peeling the fruit and then cooking, since that can break down the fiber and make that food easier to digest.”

Using this method, you can enjoy fall fruits with a lower risk of experiencing symptoms. Here are five to consider, along with ideas on how to prepare them.

1. Apples

A quintessential autumnal fruit, apples are available in a number of varieties and are naturally low in fat, sodium, and calories. They’re also high in antioxidants and soluble fiber, which helps prevent loose stools.
