Often, people with Alzheimer’s “have a harder time processing new or unexpected things, so having a routine that’s somewhat predictable helps reduce the number of unexpected activities and makes transitions a bit easier,” says Stephanie Nothelle, MD, an associate professor of medicine who specializes in geriatric care at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center in Baltimore. “It’s easier for the brain to recognize that pattern and feel comfortable with the familiarity.”
