Omar Apollo stunned on the 97th Academy Awards red carpet, wearing the ultimate veil moment with rosy blush and black eyeliner. The singer worked with Brandon Tan, stylist and fashion director of Cosmopolitan and Seventeen, for the big night. And while there wasn’t a specific reference, both agreed that they wanted to incorporate an element that felt unexpected for men’s carpet dressing.
“It crossed my mind that I couldn’t think of a singular reference of a man wearing a birdcage veil, and so it inspired me to consider it here,” Tan tells Vogue. “The Valentino look delivered the afternoon of our fitting on Friday, and as soon as he put it on, I ran across the room to grab the bird cage veil. It clicked immediately.”
As for grooming, groomer Anna Bernabe wanted to blend “elements of masculinity and feminity.” For hair, Bernabe tells Vogue she used firm hair gel and strong hairspray to sculpt sharp, graphic lines inside his hair. For makeup, she used various shades of blush to get a rosy flush, then added some depth to his cheekbones and lined his eyes with black liner.
To get that natural, worn-in effect, she told him to do this one thing with his eyes: “Squeeze tightly.” A great hack for anyone who loves liner moving forward.
