It wasn’t just another Monday night at The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Community Center. “Tonight, there is an imperative,” said Dorothy Berwin, co-founder of The Center’s annual gala. Inside the landmarked West Village building, an array of artful individuals sat enrapt, gathered not just to celebrate Pride Month—but to stand in solidarity.

The stakes were high. The evening aimed to spotlight The Center’s mission, now under increased threat—alongside so many LGBTQ organizations across New York City. “It’s always been important to support The Center,” Berwin continued. “They do incredible work—in mental health, advocacy, women’s health, youth services, and LGBTQ homelessness. But this year, they’re losing $2 million in funding. So tonight, there’s a real sense of urgency.”

Before a program of stirring speeches and performances began, guests filtered into the garden for an elegant cocktail hour. Circulating the patio were Brandon Blackwood, Christian Cowan, Ivy Getty, Sarah Hoover, Lola Leon, Presley Oldham, Isaac Boots, and many more, dressed to delight.

Upstairs, the crowd took their seats for a dinner that was as vibrant as the cause itself—think electric pinks, mirrored surfaces, and disco hues. Bette Midler, in a poignant yet playful speech, presented Michael Kors and Lance Le Pere with the Lifetime Achievement Award. Peter Speliopoulos and Robert Turner received the Trailblazer Award, while Congresswoman Sarah McBride delivered a rousing call to action.

“The original idea for the dinner was to bring the fashion community to The Center—to help them feel connected to its programming and purpose,” Speliopoulos told Vogue. “Over the years, with shifts in the industry, we’ve expanded to include the art, design, architecture, and interiors communities. It’s a natural evolution—so many of us are linked through friendships and creative collaborations. It’s the right time to grow the event.”

Following the speeches, a spirited live auction raised thousands within minutes, and Broadway star J. Harrison Ghee brought the house down with a vibrant performance. It was a night that affirmed the past, celebrated the present, and rallied hope for the future.

“I hope guests take away the idea that they have possibilities beyond their own imagination,” Ghee said. “That they can be fabulous in ways they never even expected.”
