The National Kidney Foundation considers apples to be a superfood, as they are rich in antioxidants and a good source of fiber and vitamin C. Apples are low in calories and may even help control blood sugar.

Although some fresh fruit such as bananas and oranges are high in potassium and are on the list of foods to avoid if you have C3G or IC-MPGN, apples and other fruits such as pears and berries are low in potassium, phosphorus, and sodium.

“Berries are one of the highest fiber fruits,” Evink says. “Fiber is extremely important with kidney disease because it can help support regular bowel movements.”

Evink also says that constipation can contribute to high potassium, which can be dangerous if not treated.

“Therefore, making sure to consume meals and snacks that contribute to a higher fiber intake is a good preventative strategy,” she says.
