When you are in remission from multiple myeloma, life does not simply return to normal. That is because multiple myeloma is not a cancer you treat once and move on from. Most people see this cancer return, or relapse, at some point — sometimes more than once.
This cycle of uncertainty can weigh heavily on your mind. In fact, many people find the fear of relapsing harder to cope with than the treatment itself. If that sounds familiar, “You are not alone in this experience,” says Stephanie Figer, an oncology social worker at Cleveland Clinic in Ohio. “Most people in remission have this anxiety, and it is perfectly typical to experience that to some level.”
But you don’t have to stay stuck in a state of worry. By focusing on what you can control, learning ways to manage your fear, and finding the right support, you can reduce your anxiety about relapse and feel more present in your daily life.
