Could Melatonin Offer Relief From Chronic Pain?

Many people turn to melatonin as a gentle sleep aid, but new research suggests the supplement may also ease chronic muscle and joint pain.

The findings are significant because roughly two-thirds of people with chronic pain also struggle with sleep. Plus, some common pain medicines can come with side effects or safety concerns, especially when used long-term.

“I’m always excited when we find alternative pain options that could potentially be helpful with minimal side effects,” says Alba Azola, MD, an assistant professor of physical medicine and rehabilitation at Johns Hopkins Medicine in Baltimore, who wasn’t involved in the research.
