Mindy Kaling is a legendary actress, known for The Office, The Mindy Project, and more. But now she’s turned to behind-the-scenes work, co-creating Max’s The Sex Lives of College Girls, which just dropped its third season.
In all her promotion of the show, it’s easy to notice that the 45-year-old looks super fit and glowy right now. There’s Mindy showing off some seriously toned legs in several different skirts in one Instagram photo dump, along with Mindy flashing a peek of toned abs while celebrating Diwali.
Over the past few years, Mindy has made it clear that she’s made some big changes to her diet and workout routine. So how does she feel her healthiest? Here’s what she’s shared.
She eats everything in moderation.
Mindy doesn’t restrict herself anymore. “If there was an awards show or I was shooting something, I used to be the person that was like, ‘I have to stop eating these foods, or six weeks beforehand, I’m only going to juice,’” she told Today.
Now, Mindy eats her favorites, but less often. “I’m never going be someone who can just have spinach and salmon every day,” she said. “I just am really for the first time in my life, trying moderation, and I love it.”
Mindy previously told Women’s Health that she looks at food as fuel to help give her energy to play with her kids. Breakfast might be a green smoothie or Huevos rancheros, which lunch is usually sushi or a turkey sandwich. For dinner, Mindy usually opts for fish or chicken curry. The writer-actress also calls dessert a “non-negotiable.”
She’s a fan of low-impact workouts.
Mindy gets up at 5:45 a.m. on most days, and she’ll kick things off with a sunrise jog or yoga flow class three days a week, she told WH.
The mom-of-two is also big on walking. “If I can get in about 15 to 20 miles of walking a week, I have mental clarity, I feel like I get better sleep at night,” she told Prevention in May.
But if she can’t go on a long stroll, Mindy will find ways to sneak in steps. “I will go on a two-mile walk after dropping my kid off at school and call a friend from high school to catch up on the phone,” she told E! News. “It doesn’t feel like I’m working out, but I am, and I enjoy that I get to socialize too.”
She also loves to strength train.
The Office alum lifts weights, too. “I remember as a kid, always hearing, ‘When you get older, you lose muscle mass. You need to start lifting,’” Mindy told Prevention. “But so much of the focus when I was younger was ‘How do I be skinny?’”
Now, she said she sees, “first-hand, just how important” it is to strength train.
She prides herself on hydration.
Mindy focuses on hydration first thing. In fact, she told WH that she aims to drink 50 ounces of water before 7 a.m.
“That’s a huge weight off my shoulders because I think hydration is so key,” she said. “Half the times I’m in a bad mood it’s because I’m not hydrated, so for me that’s super important.”
She doesn’t lose weight for ‘vanity.’
Mindy is way more self-assured than she used to be. “I’m feeling really confident in my body these days, which is not something that I’ve been able to say for my whole life,” she told People in 2022.
She’s also pleased that “all my clothes kind of fit,” she told Today. “It’s so easy to get ready and that’s great. I feel happy about that.”
But Mindy is focused on weight loss for her health, not how she looks. “I know people are really interested in my body and the changes in my body, and I think it’s flattering and sometimes it’s just a little much, so I don’t try to tune it in too much,” she told People. “The truth is that I spend so much time and energy trying to be healthy.”
Over the years, Mindy has “tried really hard” to get over the idea of losing weight for “vanity.” And now, she’s finally done it, she told the publication.
“For me, healthy is working out, moving my body a lot, keeping hydrated, and then not having negative connotations around working out and making me feel like if I don’t do this, then I won’t be something else,” she said. “And that’s taken a long time to kind of shed those old ideas of working out.”
Love to see it, Mindy!
