Childhood and Even Prenatal Stress Could Fuel Digestive Disorders in Adults

If you’re one of the 70 million people in the United States living with a digestive disease, you may be eager for answers about the root cause. New research suggests one possible factor: early life stress.

A new study published in the journal Gastroenterology suggests that children exposed to stress in the womb or in their early years have a higher risk of developing conditions like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), abdominal pain, and recurring constipation or diarrhea.

“When we see adult or pediatric patients with disorders of gut-brain interaction, we shouldn’t only be asking about recent stressors, but lifelong stressors as well,” says study coauthor Kara Margolis, MD, director of the NYU Pain Research Center. “Stressors during development make a difference in long-term symptoms.”
