When it comes to Brooks running shoes, “designed in a lab” is no mere figure of speech. The brand’s team of engineers puts each new piece of technology through a rigorous design process in order to create a state-of-the-art training experience for every runner who laces up their shoes. Case in point? Brooks DNA Tuned. Its nitrogen-infused foam cushioning system combines large and small foam cells for optimal comfort and energy return in each stride. We took an in-depth look at DNA Tuned to see how it works. Here’s what we learned.

DNA Tuned is all about the strategic arrangement of foam cells of various sizes. Larger cells, which offer softer cushioning, are placed primarily in the heel of the shoe, which gets the brunt of the impact each time your foot strikes the ground. Smaller cells, on the other hand, are more responsive to quick movements and alterations in your stride, and are mostly concentrated in the forefoot to promote flexibility and encourage powerful toe-offs. By fusing these different foam cells together without added glues, Brooks is able to create a seamless construction that provides the runner with the ultimate cushioning and return. Check out the video above to find out more about this game-changing technology.
