Some Antibiotics Can Alter the Bacteria in Your Gut for Up to 8 Years

Antibiotics can be lifesaving medications for treating infections, but scientists have long worried about how overuse may be fueling antimicrobial resistance — the rise of bacterial strains that are unresponsive to these medications.
Now, new research has flagged another potential issue: A single course of antibiotics can cause long-term changes to the gut microbiome, in some cases lasting at least four to eight years.

Study coauthor Tove Fall, PhD, a professor of molecular epidemiology at Uppsala University in Sweden, says it’s well-known that antibiotics can cause short-term changes to the gut microbiome. The latest findings suggest these changes could be longer-lasting than previously thought.
