You never forget your first Winona Ryder film. Ours was 1988’s Beetlejuice, where a 17-year-old Ryder played the “strange but unusual” (a quote we desperately identified with as a moody teen), baby-banged Lydia Deetz. Yesterday, Ryder walked the red carpet at the Venice Film Festival in honor of reprising her iconic role in the film’s 2024 sequel, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. “It’s so great to return to the Venice Film Festival,” Ryder tells Vogue. “I was here with Marty’s film The Age of Innocence in 1993. To return to Venice now with Tim Burton and my Beetlejuice family means everything to me.”
If Ryder’s red carpet look had a theme, it was certainly method dressing: The star paid homage to Lydia Deetz with a custom Chanel look that was heavy on the tulle. The silhouette, a blazer and tulle skirt combo, was inspired by the label’s spring 2007 couture collection; It included a structured black tuxedo jacket and matching satin-collared waistcoat, paired with a crêpe de chine blouse, black silk satin bow, and black silk tulle underskirt. The look took 224 hours to make.
For the beauty, meanwhile, “the look was punk rock queen,” shares makeup artist Francelle Daly, who has known Ryder for 13 years. “There is an ode to Lydia in the look with the purple smoky eye and lived-in liner.” To get the hyper-pigmented look, Daly starts by priming the eyes with Love + Craft + Beauty Eyeshadow Primer. From there, it’s all about layering liners and shadows to get the desired effect (Ryder has on a combination of Motor Gel Line Eye Pencil and dark purple and aubergine shadows).
