From her translucent manicure to the finger curls, Sydney Sweeney’s 2025 Met Gala glam was on point—but it was her eye makeup that really stood out. Featuring double eyeliner, a throwback 1960s trick, it made her eyes the focal point in an otherwise subdued makeup look that included beige blush and a glossy aughts lip.
What is the double eyeliner trick?
Double eyeliner is all about optically enlarging the whites of the eyes with the help of two eyeliners: one black and one white. The white liner is used on the waterline, while the black is used to redraw the eye just outside the lash line.
As seen on Sweeney, the upper liner follows the natural, rounded shape of the lash line, while the lower lash line is straight, creating the visual illusion of a larger eye. Importantly, the lines at the top and bottom do not connect at either edge. The use of false eyelashes is also essential to reinforce this redesigned shape.
With so much emphasis on the eyes, neutral lips are a must. Sweeney’s are expertly contoured and just barely overlined at the Cupid’s bow, then highlighted with a dab of gloss to accentuate fullness. It’s also worth noting that her custom Miu Miu dress was inspired by one worn by one of Hitchcock’s favorite actresses, Kim Novak—another nod to the glamour of the 1960s.
