Social anxiety can make everyday interactions hard to navigate. People with this type of anxiety may feel anxious or fearful when they engage with other people or are in a situation where they may be judged. This can make it difficult to attend a work meeting, go on a date, or even chat with your local barista.

“It’s helpful to know that a lot of people have some degree of social anxiety, but we can still be social,” says Ashley Arens, PhD, a psychologist and an assistant professor of psychology at the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. “We can learn to get better.”
