Most research on cold plunging focuses on workout recovery and general wellness, not breast cancer care.
While other types of cold therapy have been studied for use in breast cancer — for example, cold caps to prevent chemotherapy-related hair loss — the research to support cold plunging as a helpful tool during breast cancer treatment and recovery is lacking.
As a result, major organizations such as the American Cancer Society and National Cancer Institute do not currently include cold plunging as part of standard breast cancer recovery or supportive care guidelines.
Safety Concerns About Cold Plunging
There are important safety considerations, particularly if you’re undergoing or recovering from breast cancer treatment.
Cold exposure also reduces blood flow to the skin and tissues, which may delay wound healing after surgery.
Additionally, cold plunging may place significant stress on the heart and nervous system, as it can:
- Trigger a rapid increase in heart rate
- Spike your blood pressure
- Activate your fight-or-flight response
