When you’re in the throes of postpartum depression (PPD), you know how hard it is to get out of bed in the morning, let alone get through the day. The fog you’re in and lack of motivation that often comes with PPD can make even seemingly simple things feel nearly impossible to do.
“Postpartum depression can make even basic tasks feel overwhelming,” says Sipra Laddha, MD, a perinatal psychiatrist in Atlanta and the founder of LunaJoy, a women’s mental health practice. But the little things you do for yourself each day can actually go a long way in helping you manage PPD. “Small, daily habits help create structure, predictability, and moments of emotional regulation throughout the day,” she says.

Remember that while incorporating some easy-to-do things into your routine can be therapeutic, they should complement your PPD treatment given to you by your doctor, not replace it. “These micro-interventions or habits are not meant to ‘fix’ PPD on their own, but they can reduce the sense of helplessness,” Dr. Laddha says.
