The actress, comedian, and talk show host Whoopi Goldberg was diagnosed with endometriosis four decades ago, and she considers herself very lucky to have found a doctor who diagnosed her and helped treat it. So she was surprised when she discovered how many women live with this disease for years before understanding what’s happening inside their bodies.
In an episode of The View that aired in 2023, she spoke with Hillary Clinton — an executive producer of Below the Belt, a documentary aimed at raising awareness about endometriosis — about her frustration that many women don’t receive a timely diagnosis. “When I saw this documentary and I heard that it takes them 6 to 10 years to even get the diagnosis, I don’t understand that! What are they doing in medical school!?”
At a gala hosted years earlier by the Endometriosis Foundation of America, Goldberg said, “There is nothing dirty about [endometriosis]. No religious group is going to be pissed if you discuss this. Because if you don’t discuss it, many more women are going to find themselves unable to have children, or find themselves close to dying because [the disease has] led to something else.”
