One of the most challenging aspects of fibromyalgia is the condition’s unpredictability, with symptoms that can fluctuate daily and sometimes even hourly. Pain may move from one part of the body to another, and symptoms can suddenly intensify for days or weeks and then subside just as quickly. That can lead you to feel overwhelmed and powerless.

“A consistent routine is important for those with fibromyalgia, since it brings structure and control to an otherwise unpredictable condition,” says Eric Ascher, DO, a family medicine physician at Northwell Health’s Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City. “Structure allows you to make tasks manageable, reduces stress, and hopefully minimizes symptom flares.”

Daily habits should feel supportive, not like they’re items on a to-do list. They won’t replace medical treatment, but they have the potential to improve your quality of life. Here are five to consider when you’re managing fibromyalgia.

1. Set a Consistent Bedtime and Wake Time

Sleep issues can make daily life more difficult when you have fibromyalgia, because they can cause daytime fatigue and trouble concentrating. But setting a consistent bedtime and wake time each day, even on weekends and on vacation, can be a first step toward improving sleep quality.
